Debbie Harry, The Queen of Punk, still reigns says Larry Hirsch on DINOSAUR’s 50 Over 50 List from Volume 2, Issue 1 Illustration by Jim Winters.

j-winters-dino-deborah-harryDebbie Harry has been the Queen of Punk Rock since everyone got together to start making punk and realized they needed the oversight. With guitarist-songwriter Chris Stein, the former dancer, backup singer, and Playboy Bunny mixed punk, reggae, disco, and rap with her cool sexiness, unique style, and dreamy vocals to launch Blondie on a platinum-selling ride around the globe. After the band split, Harry continued as a solo artist, filling the gaps with film and television roles, until a 1999 Blondie reunion gave her another hit with “Maria.” She’s still recording and performing at seventy, and I’m sure no one will be dumb enough to yell, “Hey Blondie!” at her ever again.
